Stephanie Hunte recorded a hat-trick as St. Vincent and the Grenadines triumphed 3-1 over the U.S. Virgin Islands in their 2023 CFU Girls’ U14 Challenge Series opener.
The teams were playing on day one of the 2023 CFU Girls’ U14 Challenge Series being held in St. John’s, Antigua.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines came out in full attacking mode in the Tier II Group A match while the USVI found themselves on rapid defensive mode.
Stephanie Hunte and Astrel Bynoe of the Vincy Heat wasted little time in attacking and creating multiple opportunities for their team. But excellent goalkeeping from the USVI’s Jimmillia Plante denied them.
It was not until the 45th minute of play that Hunte struck a forceful ball into the far post of the goal, giving her team the lead. She continued to excel with great strides, capitalizing on two additional goals in the 66th and 69th minutes, securing the first hat-trick of the competition.
USVI, however, kept their composure and resilience, and it paid off. Vigga Tyson was successful in etching her name on the score sheet with the lone goal for the Virgin Islanders in the 70th minute of play.
Both teams will get set to continue their race for the title with St. Vincent and the Grenadines next facing Dominica and USVI going up against Grenada.
